The application of the Magnetic Particle Test (INN accredited service) consists of magnetizing a piece of ferrous material to be inspected, applying the magnetizable particles (fine powder of iron filings) and evaluating the indications produced by the grouping of the particles by deviations in the magnetic field at certain points where discontinuities exist. The test is performed according to ASTM E 709 and ASME V.
This procedure is used to detect surface and subsurface discontinuities (up to about 1/4 "deep) in ferromagnetic materials. The test may be performed with visible light or ultraviolet light.
